Delhi Capitals (DC) and Bengal wicketkeeper-batter Abhishek Porel has been granted bail after spending more than a month in jail. He is expected to be released on Friday.
Porel was arrested on August 11 following a complaint filed by a young medical student. She accused the cricketer of having a physical relationship with her after allegedly promising to marry her.
The woman also alleged that Porel threatened to share intimate photographs of her.
What charges were filed against Porel?
Porel was booked under several sections of the law, with many of the charges being non-bailable. The case includes multiple provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, as well as Sections 66E and 72 of the Information Technology Act.
The allegations include sexual relations on the promise of marriage, harassment, threats and other offences. These are allegations made in the complaint and have not been established as facts by a court.
What happened after his arrest?
The case was heard at the Calcutta High Court on August 11. During the hearing, Magra Police informed Justice Sougat Bhattacharyya that Porel had been arrested.
Porel was subsequently produced before the Chinsurah court. The court also directed the police to examine the electronic devices in his possession as part of the investigation.
The complainant had lodged an FIR at Magra Police Station several days before Porel’s arrest.
Did Porel deny the allegations?
Yes. Porel denied the allegations made against him before his arrest. Police also arrested another friend of Porel and the woman in connection with the case, according to the report.
When will Porel be released?
The Chinsurah court granted Porel bail on Thursday. However, he is expected to remain in jail for another day because of the release process.
If the formalities are completed as expected, Porel could walk out of jail on Friday, which coincides with Vishwakarma Puja.
