IND vs SL: The BCCI appointed Gautam Gambhir as the new head coach of the Indian men's cricket team after Rahul Dravid's tenure ended post winning the 2024 T20 World Cup but the board hasn't finalised his support staff yet. Gambhir gave his suggestions to choose his support staff but the board declined those rejections and have instead given him a stop-gap solution for the upcoming white-ball series against Sri Lanka.

The Men in Blue would be playing a three-match T20I series and as many ODIs against Sri Lanka. Suryakumar Yadav would be leading the T20I side by replacing Hardik Pandya in the race to become the new skipper after Rohit Sharma's retirement from the T20Is and this series would begin from July 27 in Pallekele and this will be Gautam Gambhir's first assignment as the new head coach. The three-match ODI series would in fact be team India's preparations for the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy and thus this ODI series against Sri Lanka would begin from August 3.

Gambhir was asked to finalise his support staff by July 22 but since he doesn't have much time left now, he will probably be going to Sri Lanka with the NCA coaches. He had given five names, which he wanted be in his support staff team, but BCCI has turned those down except Abhishek Nayar, who would most likely become the assistant coach. At the same time, the board might appoint former Australian and NCA coach Troy Cooley as the stop bowling coach for this series.

Team India to leave for Pallekele on July 22

The Men in Blue would be flying to Sri Lanka for the T20I series on July 22 with Gambhir as officially the new head coach and would also be attending a pre-match press conference on Monday.

It will be India's second T20I series after winning the 2024 T20 World Cup as earlier this a second-string team had already flown to Zimbabwe and under Shubman Gill's leadership and VVS Laxman as the stand-in coach, had won the series 4-1.
