Andre Russel Retirement: West Indies cricket has revealed that their star all-rounder Andre Russell will be retiring from international cricket after the first T20I against Australia, which will be held next week. The first two matches would be held at Sabina Park in Jamaica, which is also Russell's home ground. The matches would be held on July 20 and 22.

Russell's decision to retire came just after Nicholas Pooran retired from the sport, just a few months ahead of the men's T20 World Cup, which would be held in India and Sri Lanka. Russell was a part of the team that had won the 2012 and 2016 T20 World Cups and had represented the West Indies in 84 matches in the shortest format.

In his international career, he has scored 1078 runs and has taken 61 wickets in this format. He has represented the West Indies in the longest format just once, and that too way back in 2010, and has played in 70 ODIs, where he has scored 1034 runs and has taken 70 wickets.

What Russell said about retirement

Russell has represented the West Indies for 15 years and reckoned that it was one of his life's proudest achievements. He expressed his gratitude since he would be retiring from international cricket at his home ground and will aim to end his career on a good note.

“Words cannot explain what it meant. To represent the West Indies has been one of the proudest achievements in my life. When I was a kid, I did not expect to get to this level, but the more you start to play and get to love the sport, you realize what you can achieve. This inspired me to become better because I wanted to leave a mark in the maroon colours and become an inspiration to others. I love playing for the West Indies, and I love playing at home in front of my family and friends, where I get to showcase my talent and produce more high-quality performances. I want to finish my international career on a high while being a role model for the next generation of cricketers coming out of the Caribbean,” Russell had said while announcing his retirement.
