The struggles for former Pakistan captain Babar Azam in Test cricket have persisted for some time and they were quite evident during the Boxing Day Test against Australia as he was dismissed for just one run on Day 2 at the MCG. Despite the optimism of fans and a motivational quote shared on social media, Babar was unable to convert his determination into on-field performance.

His lean patch in Test cricket became even more evident as he accumulated only 162 runs throughout 2023 with an average of 23. The Boxing Day Test was viewed as an opportunity for Babar to make a significant contribution and help Pakistan break their 15-match losing streak in Australia. However, he managed scores of only 21 and 14 runs in the first Test.

Australian captain Pat Cummins got the better of him in this innings with an in-dipper which went through the gate which disturbed Babar's stumps. Check out the video and reactions from the fans here:

This dip in form followed Babar stepping down from the captaincy after Pakistan's disappointing Cricket World Cup campaign, where they were eliminated in the group stage. Criticism of Babar's lackluster form has grown, with former cricketer highlighting his poor performance in the Australia series.
