AUS vs SA ICC WTC Final 2025: Australia's star fast bowler Mitchell Starc scripted history on the first day of the WTC final as he has become the highest wicket-taker during ICC tournament summit clashes. He achieved this feat in the WTC final against South Africa at Lord's. Starc, who represented Australia during his fifth ICC summit clash, has taken 11 wickets now and has broken Mohammed Shami's record, who has taken 10 wickets after playing in four summit clashes. This record helped Starc become one of Australia's biggest match-performers.
Starc achieved this milestone when he dismissed Aiden Markram for a duck during the second innings. He then took Ryan Rickleton's wicket, who had scored just 16 runs and registered figures of 2/10 on the first day during his brilliant spell.
He now has become the second-highest wicket-getter during ICC knockout matches. He has joined the legendary Australian cricketers Glenn McGrath and Mohammed Shami in an elite list, who have taken 22 wickets apiece. Ex-Sri Lankan cricketer Muttiah Miralitharan is sitting at the top position of this list as he has taken 23 wickets.
Starc's brilliant efforts helped Australia pile pressure on the Proteas as they were reeling at 43/3 at stumps on Day 1. The Temba Bavuma-led side are trailing by 169 runs and they will face a daunting task once the match begins on the second day as Starc will aim to repeat his heroics on a tricky surface at Lord's.
The Pat Cummins-led side was skittled out for just 212 runs during the first innings where Kagiso Rabada spearheaded South Africa's bowling attack by taking a five-for but Starc's brilliant bowling prowess helped Australia make a comeback towards the fag end of the day.
Starc will aim to continue his sublime form and help Australia inch closer to winning their second consecutive WTC title.
