SA vs AUS WTC Final 2025 Day 2: South Africa's star pacer Kagiso Rabada scripted history by getting his name added at the Lord's Honour Board for the second time and then Australia's fast bowlers rattled South Africa's batting lineup and dominated the first day of the WTC final. About 14 wickets were taken as it the bowlers' show on the first day at the Lord's Cricket ground as South Africa were tottering at 4/43 as Mitchell Starc, Pat Cummins and Josh Hazlewood helped Australia bounce back late during the last session on the first day.
The Temba Bavuma-led side were trailing by 169 runs on the first day, where captain Temba Bavuma and David Bedingham were out there in the middle.
During the first innings, the defending champions were skittled out for 212 runs as Temba Bavuma won the toss and chose to bowl first as he wanted to expose Australia's unsettled top-order batting lineup under overcast conditions and this decision worked in their favor as the Pat Cummins-led side were reeling at 4/67.
Rabada registered brilliant figures of 5/51, in 15.4 overs, which was also his 17th five-wicket haul in the longest format, whereas Australia's star batter Steve Smith and all-rounder Beau Webster scored half-centuries each and also stitched a 79-run partnership to help Australia bounce back after suffering a top-order batting collapse.
Rabada, who also recently served a one-month ban for using recreational drugs, dismantled Australia's top-order batting lineup in an explosive spell of 9/2 after six overs as he took wickets at regular intervals with the help of shiny, wobbly dukes.
Australia's star opener Usman Khawaja, who was playing cautiously, survived the first half an hour on a tricky surface but then was dismissed for a 20-ball duck as he edged towards the slip cordon, where David Bedingham was standing and took an easy catch.
After three balls, Rabada then dismissed Cameron Green, who made a comeback after a long injury layoff and batted at the No.3 position for the first time in the longest format as a fuller delivery had touched the outside edge and Aiden Markram, who was standing at second slip, took an easy catch.
Australia's new opener Marnus Labuschagne, then stitched a partnership of 30 runs for the third wicket with Steve Smith, and then Marco Jansen dismissed him for scoring just 17 runs as wicket-keeper Kyle Verryne caught him behind.
