AUS vs SA WTC Final 2025: Australia's star pacer Mitchell Starc has scripted history in the WTC final against South Africa as he gave the Proteas a hard time and helped Australia post a target of more than 250 runs even though they were reeling at 77/7 at one point. Starc scored a gritty fifty and helped the reigning champions post a target of 207 runs and had set a stiff target of 282 runs for South Africa.

Mitchell Starc creates history

Mitchell Starc has become the first player in history to have scored more than 40 runs during an innings as a No.9 batter or below during an ICC tournament. West Indies' Courtney Browne had held the record earlier in his innings during the 2004 Champions Trophy summit clash against England.

Starc has become the second player besides Shardul Thakur to have smashed a fifty during an ICC summit clash as a No.8 or below batter.

He also scored the most runs as a batter during an ICC summit clash at no.9 or below position and had become the first batter to have smashed a half-century. South Africa's Rory Kleinvedt had earlier held this record as he scored 43 runs against England during the 2013 Champions Trophy semifinal.

Starc and Hazlewood also surpassed the record created by legendary Australian fast bowlers Dennis Lillee and Jeff Thompson during the 1975 World Cup for scoring the most runs for the 10th wicket during a ICC summit clash. Starc and Hazlewood stitched a partnership of 59 runs and were the first last wicket partnership to have stitched a partnership of 50 runs during an ICC tournament. Lilee and Thompson had stitched a partnership of 41 runs against West Indies, which they lost.

It is also the highest partnership for the 10th wicket during an ICC event besides a 59-run partnership between James Franklin and Jeetan Patel during the 2007 World Cup semifinal held in Kingston.
