Glenn Maxwell has stepped down as Melbourne Stars captain after the franchise failed to book a playoff berth in the ongoing Big Bash League season. Melbourne Stars has confirmed the news to ESPNcricinfo after the Daily Telegraph first revealed Maxwell's decision.

As per the ESPNcricinfo report, Maxwell told his decision to step down from his leadership role to teammates following their final league match against Hobart Hurricanes.

Stars finished the tournament at sixth spot with three consecutive defeats. They only won four matches and grabbed eight points in 10 matches. Only the top four teams of the tournament moved to the knockout stage. Brisbane Heat, Sydney Sixers, Perth Scorchers and Adelaide Strikers will compete for the coveted title.

After their last league match, Maxwell expressed frustration after missing out on the finals for the fourth successive season.

"We left our run in someone else's hands which is never what you want to do in this game. After the first couple of years, having so much dominance and not being able to get over that final hurdle, it feels like the last four years out of finals contention is quite frustrating," Maxwell told Fox Cricket during the final game of this season.

"We feel like we've had a good enough list, probably haven't had enough luck with injuries and timing, replacements and it just all seems to compound on itself," he added.

Maxwell scored 243 runs at a strike rate of 173.57 this season and claimed seven wickets. Stars are one of the two clubs who have not lifted the BBL title. They have finished three seasons as runner-up but failed to win the trophy.

Stars head coach Peter Moores credited Maxwell's contribution in the season and lauded him for putting his 'heart and soul' into the franchise.

"Credit to him, he comes off the back of a World Cup, and what a World Cup for him personally and Australia, but to get the enthusiasm and the drive, that's all your looking for as a coach, and he's had that every day," Moores said during the final game of the season.

"The Stars is where he captains, and he's put his heart and soul into it. I've had good laughs with him on and around the game, and also off the field, it's been great fun," he added.
