The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) secretary Devajit Saikia has addressed the speculation surrounding Ajit Agarkar and the selection committee.
Agarkar, who is the chairman of the senior men’s selection committee, was notably absent from the BCCI’s review meeting held at the board’s headquarters in Mumbai on Wednesday.
Will BCCI continue with Agarkar?
His absence quickly led to speculation among fans that Agarkar could be removed from his post, especially with his contract set to end in September. There were also reports suggesting that the BCCI could consider a change in the selection committee after India’s recent defeats against Ireland and England.

However, Saikia made it clear after the meeting that there are no plans to make any changes to the Agarkar-led selection committee.
“Chief selector Ajit Agarkar was out of station and couldn’t even join online. The meeting focused on building the best team for the 2027 ODI World Cup,” Saikia told reporters.
Saikia on Rohit Sharma's future
Saikia also spoke about Rohit Sharma’s future, which was one of the key talking points during the review meeting.
Rohit has already retired from Test and T20I cricket but continues to play ODIs for India. His future once again came under the spotlight after reports claimed that he could retire following the England series. However, the veteran batter responded in the best possible way, scoring a century in the third ODI against England.

Saikia backed Rohit’s current form and questioned the need for constant speculation about his retirement.
“Rohit Sharma is playing superbly in all matches. What more do you want? In the last match, he scored 130-140 runs. So why is there speculation? I do not want to give fodder to the speculators,” Saikia said after the meeting.
