India's great Rohit Sharma’s retirement plans were discussed during the BCCI review meeting on September 3. Following the meeting, BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia made it clear that the former India captain has no immediate plans to retire and will continue playing ODI cricket.

The meeting was attended by head coach Gautam Gambhir, ODI and Test captain Shubman Gill, T20I captain Shreyas Iyer and Centre of Excellence (CoE) head VVS Laxman. Saikia also put an end to the latest speculation surrounding Rohit’s future, with India set to play a home ODI series against the West Indies later this month.

Speaking to reporters after the meeting, Saikia backed Rohit’s current form and questioned why there was so much talk about his retirement.

“Rohit Sharma is playing superbly in all matches. What more do you want? In the last match, he scored 130-140 runs. So why is there speculation? I do not want to give fodder to the speculators,” Saikia told the reporters after the meeting.

The meeting also saw the BCCI decide against creating a separate Director of Cricket Operations position. One notable absence was chief selector Ajit Agarkar, who did not attend the meeting either in person or virtually.

When did Rohit Sharma’s retirement rumours begin?

Talk of Rohit Sharma’s retirement started before the third and final ODI between India and England at Lord’s. With the 39-year-old now playing only ODI cricket, questions were raised about how long he planned to continue.

The topic even came up during the commentary, with former India head coach Ravi Shastri and others discussing the possibility of Rohit calling time on his international career.

However, Rohit responded in the best possible way. Chasing England’s massive target of 388, he produced a stunning 138-run knock. India eventually lost the match, but Rohit’s performance once again showed that he still has plenty to offer.

Rohit Sharma's upcoming outing

Rohit Sharma will now be seen featuring in the three-match ODI series against West Indies, which will start from September 27.
