Rohit Sharma is one of the greatest white-ball batters of all time. He has already retired from the T20Is and Test cricket, but continues to play in the ODI format and is the captain of the side as well.

Having made his debut for India in 2007, Rohit went on to achieve immense success in the ODI format, especially after he started opening the innings in 2013. The 38-year-old right-handed batter from Mumbai has more than 11,000 ODI runs to his name. He is also the all-time leading run-getter in T20Is.

Rohit announced his retirement from T20Is after India’s T20 World Cup 2024 title win on June 29, 2024, and stepped away from Test cricket on May 7, 2025, but wants to play ODIs for India till the 2027 World Cup. His last ODI appearance came against New Zealand and scored 76 runs from 83 balls to win the POTM award in the Champions Trophy 2025 final played at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium.

While Rohit continues to be an impactful figure, a report in the Hindustan Times claimed that the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) had expected the right-handed batter to retire from ODIs after India’s Champions Trophy win.

According to the available information, there have been no discussions between Rohit and the Ajit Agarkar-led selection committee over his ODI future.

"Quite frankly, a lot of us thought Rohit wanted to move away from the ODI format after winning the Champions Trophy. There have been no discussions between Rohit and the selectors over his ODI future," the report quoted the BCCI source as saying.

Rohit, who was horribly out of form with the bat in the 2024-25 edition of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, played a couple of impactful knocks for India in the Champions Trophy to turn down all the criticism

The right-handed batter, who is the only captain in the world to reach all four ICC tournament finals, was last seen in action during the IPL 2025 while playing for the Mumbai Indians. On the back of four half-centuries, he amassed a total of 418 runs in 15 matches. During the Eliminator match played against Gujarat Titans in Mullanpur on March 30, Rohit completed 7000 runs in the IPL and also became the first Indian batter to hammer 300 sixes in the IPL.
