IND vs AUS: India's star players Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma may have announced their retirement from Test cricket and the shortest format, but they will continue playing in ODIs, and there are high chances that they will go to Australia later this year for a three-match ODI series. As per some reports, both the legendary cricketers might also retire from ODIs after the series against Australia. But as per PTI, the BCCI is not in a hurry to make the decision on these two legendary players, but might also urge them to play a few matches for India A against Australia A in order to prepare for the white-ball series against Australia.
“There is a school of thought in the BCCI that, for the duo to get ready for the Australia series Down Under, they can play a couple of India A games in India when the Australia A team—which will have Jake Fraser-McGurk in its ranks—tours. The three List A games will be played in Kanpur on September 30, October 3, and October 5, at the same time the senior team plays the first Test against the West Indies in Ahmedabad," the report said.
Both Kohli and Rohit have scored more than 10,000 runs in this format, and they last represented India in ODIs earlier this year against New Zealand in the 2025 Champions Trophy summit clash.
During the match, Rohit had smashed 76 runs off 83 balls while chasing a target of 252 runs and was also adjudged the Player of the match. At the same time, Kohli had scored a brilliant knock of 84 runs against Australia during the semifinal and then had smashed an unbeaten century against arch-rivals Pakistan during their group stage match.
Speculations are rife that the BCCI is planning a farewell match for these two at Sydney later this year, but sources close to the BCCI have revealed that they haven't made any such plans as of now.
On being asked about the duo featuring in the Vijay Hazare Trophy, the source further revealed that the one-day domestic tournament would begin in December, and ahead of that, the Men in Blue would also be playing a three-match ODI series against South Africa at their backyard.
“Even if they play Vijay Hazare, before that, there would already be six ODIs that will be played. In between the Australia ODIs and the South Africa ODIs, there is an India A series against South Africa A where three List A games (50 overs) will be held at Rajkot on November 13, 16, and 19, respectively. Now, will the duo want to play those three A games, or possibly two, before the South Africa series is the question. Even more important is whether Ajit Agarkar and his colleagues would want that," the source added.
“Overlapping the Vijay Hazare Trophy (December 24, 2025 – January 18, 2025) will be the three ODIs between India and New Zealand (January 11, 14, 18). So even if they play the Vijay Hazare Trophy, it can’t be for more than two to three games," he concluded.
