PAK vs WI 2nd ODI: Pakistan's star batter Babar Azam's lean patch with the bat had continued yet again on Sunday as he got out for a three-ball duck during the second ODI against the West Indies in Trinidad. While facing Jayden Seales during the ninth over, he got beaten by a fuller delivery, which had hit directly to the stumps.
The West Indies fan began celebrating aggressively when Babar was seen walking back to the pavilion.
It was his first duck after playing in 31 ODIs, which was a new low in his illustrious career. Still, the video of his dismissal had gone viral on social media, where both fans and critics shared memes and jokes surrounding his recent forgetful outing with the bat.
“Babar Azam missed his century by 100 runs,” a fan had written.
“Babar Azam is the most overrated batsman in the history of Pakistan cricket,” another fan had written.
A fan had also highlighted that even though he was constantly backed, Babar has failed to take advantage of the chances that he has had. “Mickey Arthur supported him. Sarfaraz Ahmed groomed him. Imran Khan suggested him for captaincy. Ramiz Raja gave full authority to. He was never dropped in any format like other players from (2016-2014). Babar Azam has himself to blame only”.
Here's how the fans reacted on social media:
Babar Azam’s poor run of form
Babar's woeful performance with the bat isn't new. He last scored a brilliant hundred against Nepal way back in the Asia Cup 2023, and since then, he has been going through a lean patch, as it has been 71 innings since he last scored a hundred.
This long lean patch has led to questions being raised about his runs. Although Babar still can anchor the innings and score runs slowly, his not scoring centuries has become quite debatable, both by the fans and the experts.
During the series opener, he had scored a gritty knock of 47 runs off 64 balls and helped the side chase a tricky target. But his inability to convert these starts into big knocks is quite evident. He might have played a huge role in their batting lineup, but he is under immense pressure to put up a match-winning century soon.
As the series goes on, the focus will shift entirely to Babar Azam. Will he be able to prove his naysayers wrong and end his century drought? This remains to be seen.
