England white-ball captain Jos Buttler said that he is open to relinquishing wicketkeeping in order to improve his captaincy to lead the Three Lions better in the white-ball format of the game.
During the third T20I between England and Australia, Buttler revealed on Sky Sports that if he had been fit to play, he would have opted out of keeping wickets in the series.
The white-ball captain was ruled out of the T20I series and later from the ODI series against Australia because of a calf injury. Following Buttler's withdrawal due to injury, young batter Harry Brook has been appointed as the stand-in captain for the ODI series against Australia.
Meanwhile, Liam Livingstone, currently in red-hot form during the ongoing T20I series, returns to the squad after initially being left out.
"If I was playing in this T20 series, I was going to give up the gloves and commit to being at mid-off and seeing how that felt. Baz stumbled across it with injury preventing him from keeping wicket but then he really enjoyed being at mid-off so that's something we can talk about. If that's something that will really help me in my captaincy then it's something that I am open to," Buttler said on Sky Sports during the 3rd T20I match.
Buttler's last appearance in any form of cricket was in the semi-final of the T20 World Cup 2024 against India in June. The opener targetted a comeback in the knockout stages of the T20 Blast, but missed out after faltering in his rehabilitation.
"I am very open to those kinds of things. I just want what's best for the team and what's best for the team is going to be me being the best captain I can be. If I have to move from behind the wickets to do that, then so be it," he further added on the matter.
Incessant rain in Manchester wreaked havoc as the T20I series between England and Australia was levelled at 1-1. The third and last match, which was supposed to be held on Sunday at Old Trafford was washed out without a single ball being bowled.
