The standout performance for England came from Ben Stokes, who managed to score 43 runs from 73 deliveries. Alongside him, Dawid Malan contributed 28 runs , and Jonny Bairstow added 30 runs.
Despite Stokes' effort, the rest of England's batting lineup collapsed like a domino effect. Joe Root and Jos Buttler missed out on an opportunity to anchor their innings in the crucial tie.
Moeen Ali and Stokes briefly steadied the innings, but Angelo Mathews struck again, leaving Stokes to partner with the lower-order batsmen. Ultimately, it was a collective failure for England's batters, unable to build partnerships effectively.
On the bowling front, Sri Lanka's Lahiru Kumara took three wickets, while Maheesh Theekshana secured two wickets.
Sri Lanka's bowlers dismantled England's batting lineup in 33.2 overs, putting the reigning champions' World Cup aspirations in jeopardy.
