England might play the three-match T20I series against Australia without captain Jos Buttler as he is facing a race to be fit after suffering a calf injury.

England will host Australia in an eight-match white-ball series, with the first T20I match taking place at The Rose Bowl in Southampton on September 11.

England's white-ball captain missed the entire The Hundred because of the calf injury he sustained in July.

Buttler will definitely miss the quarter-final match against Sussex on Wednesday, as confirmed by Red Rose head coach Dale Benkenstein. The injury has kept him sidelined since June, and a recent setback has further delayed his return to the field.

"We've had some bad news on his recovery...He had an injury he was recovering from, and he's sort of tweaked it again. He's not only just out of our T20s, but I think he's even struggling to make the international ones. He was very keen to play for us," Benkenstein on BBC Radio Lancashire.

Meanwhile, England have left out experienced campaigners like Jonny Bairstow, Moeen Ali and Chris Jordan from the squads against Australia as they gear up for preparations for the 2025 edition of the ICC Champions Trophy.

Players like Gus Atkinson, Harry Brook, Matthew Potts, and Jamie Smith, who currently are part of the ongoing Test series against Sri Lanka, are named in the ODI squad for the Australia series at home. Josh Hull has also been included in the team alongside other uncapped players Jacob Bethell and John Turner.
