Legendary India captain Sunil Gavaskar has questioned India's decision to leave out young batter Vaibhav Sooryavanshi during the recent T20I series against Ireland. The former cricketer believes the 15-year-old was ready for international cricket and feels the team missed a good chance to give him his debut.

India's tour of Ireland ended on a disappointing note as the Shreyas Iyer-led side lost both matches and suffered a 2-0 series defeat. After the series, Gavaskar shared his surprise over Sooryavanshi not getting an opportunity.

"I expected Vaibhav Sooryavanshi to debut in the Ireland series," Sunil Gavaskar told India Today.

"I thought he would play both matches. That would have been a very good way of easing him into international cricket before the sterner tests that are coming up," he added.

Gavaskar also said India could have used Sooryavanshi as an opening batter alongside either Abhishek Sharma or Sanju Samson. According to him, it would have been the ideal way to introduce the talented youngster at the international level.

Sooryavanshi has been one of the most talked-about young players after his impressive IPL 2026 campaign, and Gavaskar believes his international debut is only a matter of time.

"He will definitely get his chance. These are the kind of players you don't ignore for too long. If not in Ireland, then in the England series he should be around the mix," Gavaskar said.

Meanwhile, Ireland created history by defeating India 2-0 in the two-match T20I series. After winning the opening game by 34 runs, the hosts sealed the second match by just one run to record their first-ever bilateral series win over India in any format.

Ireland posted 154/8 in their 20 overs before their bowlers held their nerve to restrict India to 153/9. Prince Yadav hit a six off the final ball, but it was not enough to change the result.

Tilak Varma was India's highest scorer with 55 runs from 46 balls. For Ireland, Jai Moondra and Matt Hollard starred with the ball, picking up three wickets each to help their team complete a memorable series victory.
