IPL 2025: Punjab Kings captain Shreyas Iyer reveals that he wants to make a mark by batting at no.3 position in the shortest format. He would be leading a new team after guiding Kolkata Knight Riders to their third IPL title last year as Punjab Kings bought him for a whopping amount of Rs 26.75 crore during the mega auction last year. He played as a middle-order batter for KKR.

In the recently concluded mega-event, Shreyas played a huge role while batting at no.4 position for the Men in Blue, and ahead of the upcoming season he is once again aiming to bat at a new position. During the pre-season press conference, he reckoned that he wanted to make a mark as a no.3 batter for the Punjab-based franchise.

He boasts of a good record while batting at the no.3 position in the shortest format since he has scored 530 runs after playing in 19 T20Is. He last represented India in a T20I in 2023 and he revealed that the upcoming season would provide him a great opportunity to seal his spot as a no.3 batter.

"We already know that IPL is an integral part of Indian cricket. And If I would want to mark myself at some position in T20, it would be number 3. And that's what I'm focusing on. I wouldn't say that we are planning and thinking about what number I will be batting. This time I'm quite clear about that position. And I'm going to be focusing on that number. As long as the coach approves of me," Shreyas told reporters during the pre-season press conference.

'PBKS is an opportunity'

The Punjab-based franchise is one of the few teams who haven't lifted the trophy yet and also haven't reached the playoffs after 2014. They have been quite inconsistent over the past few years and have seen lots of coaches and skippers come and go.

Shreyas admitted that winning the title would be quite important. But he dismissed the notion that they are under pressure since they haven't won the title yet and considers this as a huge opportunity.

"The importance is to win the trophy. There is no pressure (of Punjab having never won the IPL). It is an opportunity," he concluded.

The Shreyas Iyer-led side will lock horns with Gujarat Giants during their tournament opener next week.
