Although, the whole crickting world is shocked by Kohli's decision to retire from the longest format, there were some speculations that the selection committee was thinking about giving him the captaincy for this Test series against England and Gill will also get some more time to be groomed.
Till now, Kohli hasn't revealed anything official, and he might be asked to feature in the five-match Test series against England, due to his vast experience of playing in tough conditions and especially when Rohit Sharma too has announced his retirement from Test cricket.
Although, the BCCI hasn't revealed as to what conversation they have had with Kohli about his future in Test cricket.
According to a PTI report, Gill would be leading the team from the front during this series. And the vice-captain's choice is quite direct, as it would be Rishabh Pant, since Jasprit Bumrah won't be considered for this position owing to his status, and when he has fitness issues, and there is no clarity as to whether he would be playing the full series.
Kohli made his debut in the longest format way back in 2011 and has played for the country in 123 matches and has scored 9230 runs at a staggering average of 46.85. He had led the team from the front in 68 Test matches and thus became India's most successful captain in Test cricket. His fitness and captaincy skills helped India become one of the most dominant Test teams at both home and away conditions.
