Modern-master Virat Kohli moved closer to Sachin Tendulkar's world record of 49 ODI hundreds, securing his 48th century in India's comprehensive seven-wicket victory over Bangladesh in the ICC Men's Cricket World Cup 2023. Kohli, renowned for his precise planning in 50-over chases, achieved an unbeaten 103 off 97 balls as India effortlessly reached the 258-run target with 51 balls to spare.
Kohli's innings featured six fours and four sixes, but it was his exceptional running between the wickets, especially in pursuit of his 48th hundred, that left an indelible mark. India's all-round performance was instrumental in their fourth consecutive victory in the tournament. Jasprit Bumrah and Ravindra Jadeja, who stepped up admirably in the absence of the injured Hardik Pandya, played crucial roles in the triumph.
The chase was set up by captain Rohit Sharma (48 off 40 balls) and Shubman Gill (53 off 55 balls), who put together an 88-run partnership. However, it was a smooth journey for Kohli, who shares a special bond with the venue, where he delivered an impeccable performance. He ran twos in the 90s with apparent ease, showcasing his exceptional fitness.

Bangladesh struggled to score against India's formidable bowling attack, finishing their innings with a modest 256/8. Initially, Bangladesh appeared to be in a strong position at 90 for no loss after 14 overs. However, India's bowlers soon regained control, stifling the opposition and maintaining a run rate of under five runs per over. Tanzid Hasan's impressive maiden half-century (51 off 43 balls) and Litton Das's 66 runs off 82 balls were the highlights for Bangladesh.
India encountered an early setback when Hardik Pandya left the field with an injury while trying to stop a shot from Litton Das. Ravindra Jadeja made a significant impact, taking two crucial wickets and executing a superb diving catch to dismiss Mushfiqur Rahim. Bangladesh ultimately managed 256 runs, which India comfortably chased down, thanks to Kohli's exceptional innings and the support of his teammates.
With this victory, India secured their fourth win in the tournament and moved closer to securing a spot in the semi-finals.
