India vs England 1st Test: Joe Root, England's star batter created history as he achieved yet another milestone in Test cricket during the first Test against India on Saturday, January 27.

The right-handed batter surpassed former Australian captain Ricky Ponting to achieve the feat as he has now 2557 Test runs against India.

The achievement stands as a major measurement of Root's consistency against India, having a remarkable average of 62.31 with 9 centuries and 10 half-centuries in 26 Tests.

He also has a promising record on Indian soil, having scored at a staggering average of 49.05 from 21 innings.

The former England Test captain is also on the cusp of becoming only the fifth visiting Test batter to score over 1000 runs in India.

Earlier in the ongoing Test, Root became the leading run-scorer in India vs England matches in the longest format as he surpassed the great Sachi Tendulkar for the milestone.

He went past Sachin's tally of 2535 Test runs against England.

Talking about his dismissal, Root was trapped in front as Bumrah took advantage of a reverse swing and got his second wicket of the innings.

Though Root used the DRS (Decision Review System), the hawk-eye suggested that the ball would have clipped the bail on the leg stump, forcing Root to head back to the pavilion.

England were bowled out for 246 runs in their first innings with skipper Ben Stokes being the top-scorer with 70 runs whereas Root scored 29 runs.

India went on to score 436 runs before getting bowled out early in the third day, taking the lead of 190 runs.
