IND vs ENG 1st Test: India's Test skipper Shubman Gill got out after scoring 147 runs on Day 2 of the series opener against England in Leeds. The youngster, who has made his debut as India's Test skipper during the ongoing series, has scripted history by scoring a century, which was also his first in overseas conditions.
Gill, when he brought up his Test hundred while making his debut as a Test skipper off 140 balls joined an elite club that has players like Virat Kohli, Dilip Vengsarjar, and Sunil Gavaskar, who too had scored a century during their debut match as India's skipper.
On Day 2, Shoaib Bashir dismissed Shubman Gill and the Indian skipper thus failed to bring up his first 150 in Tests.
This wasn't just a special ball, as it was slightly in the air and then landed towards the outside off. Gill went down the track and mistimed the shot as he tried to go big and the ball went towards the leg side. But he didn't touch the ball but instead swung it. Just one fielder was standing at the leg side, near deep square leg and Gill smashed the ball towards deep mid-wicket. Since he never touched the ball and instead smashed it toward squarer and since Josh Tongue was standing near the boundary, he didn't have to move much.
As Gill walked back to the pavilion, the fans present at the venue were seen lauding him. Gill received a standing ovation both from his fellow teammates and the fans as he was lauded for not just scoring these many runs but also staying calm in pressure situations. The photographers, who were standing near the boundary to take pictures of an emotional Shubman Gill, who was going back to the dressing room, was seen raising his bat and became emotional after scoring a career-defining knock.
His was the first wicket to have been dismissed by a spinner during the first innings and thus the 209-run partnership also came to an end.
Gill, after getting dismissed on 147 runs, couldn't join the elite club which has players like Vijay Hazare, who also scored an unbeaten knock of 164 runs against the same opponent way back in 1951. He is the only skipper to have scored more than 150 runs during his first match as India's Test skipper.
