IND vs ENG 2nd Test: England skipper Ben Stokes came into bat at No.6 position during the first innings of the second Test in Edgbaston but couldn't score any single run. Mohammed Siraj dismissed him for a first-ball duck. It was the first time that he got out for a first-ball duck in the longest format.

Ever since Stokes made his Test debut against Australia way back in December 2013, he has been dismissed on a duck 16 times after playing in 202 innings of 113 Tests but this was the first time on Friday that he was dismissed for a first-ball duck in the longest format.

Siraj, who is spearheading the country's bowling attack during the second Test, in Jasprit Bumrah's absence, took Joe Root's wicket, who had scored 22 runs, and then took the wicket of Stokes on the next ball. Both these batters were caught behind by Rishabh Pant.

The hosts expected a lot from both these batters but they failed to fire with the bat.

Gill shines

During the first two days of the second Test match, India's new Test skipper Shubman Gill grabbed the attention due to his brilliant batting prowess. Gill, who came into bat at No.4 position on Wednesday, scored 269 runs off 387 balls. He had smashed 30 fours and three sixes in his innings and helped the visitors post a mammoth target of 587 runs during the first innings.

With this knock, Gill had become the first Indian skipper to have smashed a double ton in SENA countries and he also surpassed Sachin Tendulkar's record of becoming the highest run-getter as an Indian batter in SENA countries. In the 2004 Sydney Test against Australia, Tendulkar scored an unbeaten knock of 241 runs during the first innings.

In his 269-run innings, Gill also surpassed Virat Kohli's record of the highest scorer (254 vs. South Africa in October 2019) as an Indian skipper in the longest format.

As far as the visitors are concerned, apart from Gill, star opener Yashasvi Jaiswal and all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja also made significant contributions with the bat. Jaiswal scored a gritty knock of 87 runs off 107 balls whereas Jadeja scored 89 runs off 137 balls and stitched a partnership of 203 runs for the sixth wicket with Gill.
