IND vs ENG 5th Test: Although both Jasprit Bumrah and Mohamed Siraj have been important bowlers for the country in the longest format, their careers and performances after playing in almost 40 matches provide an interesting comparison. Bumrah did take a five-wicket haul during the series opener, but Siraj was seen struggling, and that's why they lost the match.
Both these fast bowlers boast of an experience of posing a stiff challenge to the Ben Stokes-led side. After taking 210 wickets by playing in 46 matches, Bumrah has proved that he is the country's best fast bowler in recent years. He did so during the last WTC cycle by taking 77 wickets.
At the same time, who made his debut in the longest format way back in 2020, has broken important partnerships and has bowled in long spells. When he is at his absolute best, he can give the world's best batters a hard time.
Let's take a look at the comparison between Mohammed Siraj and Jasprit Bumrah after playing in 40 Test matches:
Matches and workload: Mohammed Siraj has featured in more Test matches for the country after 2020 as compared to Bumrah [36 Test], and this shows that he has carried a heavier workload, especially at the time of injury setbacks or when bowlers are rotated like Bumrah.
Overall performance:
Mohammed Siraj: After playing in 41 Test matches, he has taken 117 wickets at a brilliant average of 31.74.
Jasprit Bumrah: He has featured in 36 Test matches. Ever since Siraj made his debut, Bumrah had played in 31 Test matches and had taken 132 wickets in 59 innings. This shows a better strike rate and average when Siraj played with him.
Performance with and without Bumrah:
An interesting stat has come up about Siraj's performance: He performs brilliantly in the longest format when Bumrah is not part of the playing XI.
With Bumrah: He has taken 74 wickets after playing in 25 matches at an average of 35.00 and a strike rate of 57.3.
Without Bumrah: His performance had improved drastically as he had taken 44 wickets after playing in 16 matches at a staggering average of 25.6 and a strike rate of 45.2
Without Bumrah and Shami: His brilliant performance helped him join an elite club as he had taken 38 wickets after playing in 13 wickets, at an average of 23.1 and a strike rate of 41.8.
Best Bowling Figures:
Mohammed Siraj: His best bowling figures in this format are 6/18
Jasprit Bumrah: His best bowling figures in this format are 9/86.
Four and Five-Wicket Hauls:
Mohammed Siraj: He has taken four five-fors in Test.
Jasprit Bumrah: He has taken eight five-wicket hauls in this format.
Four-Plus Wicket Hauls in England:
Siraj recently broke Bumrah's record in England by taking his sixth four-fer or more in this format.
He has leveled Waqar Younis' record of being the Asian fast bowler for taking more such hauls in England.
In conclusion, Jasprit Bumrah has been more impressive in the longest format since he has a better average and a strike rate. But Mohamme Siraj's stats show he is a player who can perform well under pressure situations and can also give a hard time to the opponents in Bumrah or Shami's absence. He has the skills to perform well at high levels and carry a heavy workload, and thus has become an important part of the Indian Test team.
