IND vs SA 1st Test: In what was a display of understated brilliance, South African captain Dean Elgar led his team to a commanding position on the second day of the opening Test against India at the SuperSport Park in Centurion. Elgar's counter-offensive knock of 140 runs overshadowed KL Rahul's impressive 101 runs record-breaking ton.

South Africa's stand-in captain guided his team to a total of 256 for 5 at stumps, offsetting India's first innings total of 245. On Day 1, Kagiso Rabada was instrumental for the hosts as he picked up his 14th five-wicket to make it a heavy struggle for the Indian batters.

Playing in his 85th Test match, Elgar showed elegant stroke-play, smashing his 14th Test century. Alongside debutant David Bedingham, who scored a fluent half-century, Elgar added 131 runs for the fourth wicket.

Despite bowling-friendly conditions with clouds hovering throughout the day, India had to put in hard yards with the absence of Mohamamed Shami and the struggles of Shardul Thakur and debutant Prasidh Krishna.

Jasprit Bumrah, in his comeback Test, gave his all, and Mohammed Siraj displayed honesty in his effort, but the Indian bowlers could not find the right line and length collectively. Ravichandran Ashwin maintained a tight line, but the pitch did not do enough for him to run through the opposition.

Elgar's innings, combined with Bedingham's contribution, shifted the initiative away from India. As Siraj dismissed Bedingham and Prasidh claimed his first Test victim in Kyle Verreynne, South Africa ended the day in a strong position.
