IND vs SA 2nd Test: There were discussions in October, and then the Kolkata injury restarted the debate and added a fresh angle to this. Shubman Gill has been continuously playing cricket after the Asia Cup. The other players were rotated across formats, but the youngster, who is also the T20I vice-captain and ODI skipper, has played in all 4 series in the last month. His workload was thus mismanaged as he sustained a neck spasm in Kolkata last week.

This injury, due to which he had been ruled out of the second and last Test, as it was a must-win game for the host to level this series, has led to a new debate about the workload management of a skipper who plays across formats.

But Gautam Gambhir, who is the head coach of the Indian team, dismissed this notion of workload management. In the pre-match press conference, Aakash Chopra on JioStar said that when he enquired from Gambhir the same, Gambhir said that Gill should give the IPL a miss if he wants to rest.

"I asked this question to Gautam before the Test match against the West Indies. His point was that if you need workload management, then skip the IPL. If you don't want to lead because leading the IPL team puts too much pressure, then don't lead. And while playing for India, if you are fit, you are not mentally fatigued," Chopra was quoted as saying on JioStar.

Chopra also agreed with this idea and said that unless a player is suffering from a mental burnout, they should continue playing till they are in form.

"And as a batter, I can also second the opinion that when you are going through a good form, you really want to maximise. Because you never know when the bad form hits you and where the next one is going to come from. So, if there is no fitness concern per se and if there is no mental burnout concern that is very individual-specific, you stay with them and you play as much as you can, as often as you can," he concluded.

Now that the BCCI has ruled him out, Gill will need a rest of at least ten days to recover and gain match fitness. The hosts are hopeful that he recovers well in time for the ODI series against the same opponent, which will be held later this month, along with a T20I series.
