The innings of Australia started on the very first morning after Rohit Sharma won the toss and opted for fielding. The openers, Nathan McSweeney and Usman Khawaja played with restraint for a good half an hour. They scored 28 runs so far to make it 28/0 in 13.2 overs when umpires announced that the cover heads had to be placed over.
As the Australian innings continued, Usman Khawaja moved to 19 not out before the break and made it into double digits. His partner, Nathan McSweeney, was more cautious as he amassed only 4 runs but safely managed the pace-prong attack of Bumrah and Siraj with the new ball.

A steady drizzle had stopped play earlier in the sixth over as well. Pacers Jasprit Bumrah (0/8 in 6 overs), Mohammed Siraj (0/13 in 4 overs)and Akash Deep (0/2 in 3.2 overs) operated for India.
