India vs Australia 1st ODI: Shubman Gill's first match as India's ODI captain didn't go as planned as the Men in Blue suffered a 7-wicket defeat against Australia at the Optus Stadium in Perth on Sunday. Australia outclassed the India team in all departments in the first ODI match to go 1-0 in the three-match series.

After being put into bat first, India managed to score 136 runs for the loss of nine wickets in 26 overs and then failed to defend the DLS-adjusted target of 131 runs. India’s defeat on Sunday entered Gill’s name in an unwanted list. He became only the second Indian, after Virat Kohli, to lose the first Test, ODI and T20I as captain.

Gill has now become India's captain in two formats and is the vice-captain of the team in the T20I format. However, he has captained the side in the shortest format of the game in the absence of the regular skipper. The star batter made his T20I captaincy debut against Zimbabwe at Harare Sports Club on July 6, 2024, and India went down by 13 runs in that fixture. In Gill’s first Test as captain, India lost the first Test against England at Headingley in Leeds by five wickets.
