Fans were left unhappy when India captain Rohit Sharma dropped a massive update during the toss of the first ODI against England, stating that the batting stalwart Virat Kohli would be missing the opener due to a knee injury.

In the absence of Kohli, Yashasvi Jaiswal makes his first step at the inception of ODI cricket. Notably, Kohli's injury also brought an end to his impressive streak of 1130 days without being injured.

From being touted as perhaps the fittest cricketer on the global scene, he has certainly upped the levels of fitness in the Indian national cricket team ever since he took over the leadership mantle back in 2015.

However, Kohli has had his share of setbacks due to injuries, which have led to him missing several international matches throughout his career.

The former India captain's fitness has been under the scanner for some time, especially since back issues hampered his performance in 2021 and 2022.

An upper back spasm in January 2022 and stiff back issues for most parts of 2021 had him miss the warm-up match. But injuries have been a familiar nemesis for Kohli throughout his career, being laid back by many prior such instances, including a neck injury in 2018 and a right shoulder injury in 2017.

Some notable instances of Kohli being forced to sit out due to injury include:

Kohli suffered a shoulder injury while effectively making a boundary stop during the third Test in Ranchi. He could not win the race against time and was unfit for the series decider, which handed over the captaincy to Ajinkya Rahane, who brilliantly led India to an eight-wicket win and a 2-1 series victory.

After leading India to a remarkable win by 113 runs in the first Test, Virat Kohli was ruled out of the second Test due to an upper back spasm.
