IND vs ENG 3rd Test: During the first day of the third Test match being held at Lord's, the visitors got the much-needed breakthrough during the last session. Ravindra Jadeja had dismissed Ollie Pope, who had scored a gritty knock of 44 runs. Pope had stitched a partnership with Root during the second session and took the Indian bowlers to the cleaners and helped the hosts bounce back after suffering a top-order batting collapse. Jadeja tracking Pope's wicket not just dismantled the hosts' batting rhythm but also gave the visitors the much-needed breakthrough.
Thinking about a chance to pile more pressure, India captain Shubman Gill brought back Jasprit Bumrah into the attack. Bumrah had been giving a hard time to the English batters with his speed since the beginning. Gill, who knows about Bumrah's game-changing abilities, supported the star fast bowler to create an impact.
The incident occurred during the 51st over, where Root had scored a brilliant knock of 56 runs and helped the hosts bounce back brilliantly. Bumrah had bowled a sharp delivery at 135 mph and the ball went over Root's head. Root tried to play a long shot but missed it. Wicket-keeper Dhruv Jurel appealed as he thought that there was a slight edge. But the on-field umpire was unfazed and Gill decided not to take the review.
Things became quite intense. When Bumrah took his run-up, he was involved in a hilarious banter with Root. Commentator Ravi Shastri said that Bumrah might have enquired Root as to whether he touched the ball. Then Root replied that he wasn't sure.
What Did Bumrah Say To Root?
“He just asked Root, ‘Did you hit it?’ on his way back to the run-up," Ravi Shastri was heard saying on air.
“Root said, ‘I don’t know,’" he added.
In the replay, it showed that the bat didn't touch the ball.
Nitish Kumar Reddy had stuck twice during the first session as he took the wickets of openers Ben Duckett and Zak Crawley in a single and had set the foundation of a thrilling day. Ben Stokes had won the toss and chose to bat first and Root's brilliant knock has worked in their favour.
