India vs South Africa 1st Test: Jasprit Bumrah produced an outstanding effort with the ball on the first day of the first Test between India and South Africa at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata on Friday. He picked up an impressive five-wicket haul to help India bowl the Proteas out for 159 runs in 55 overs in their first innings.
This was Bumrah's 16th five-wicket haul in Test cricket. He has matched the tally of former India spinner BS Chandrasekhar and stands fifth in the list of most five-wicket hauls for India in Test cricket. The star pacer is only behind Ravichandran Ashwin, Anil Kumble, Harbhajan Singh and Kapil Dev.

Most five-wicket hauls for India
37 R Ashwin (106 Tests)
35 Anil Kumble (132)
25 Harbhajan Singh (103)
23 Kapil Dev (131)
16 Jasprit Bumrah (51)/ Bhagwat Chandrasekhar (58)
Bumrah has now become the first fast bowler to pick a five-fer in the opening day of a Test in India since Ishant Sharma's effort against Bangladesh at the same venue in 2019. The last to do so in a Test match in India was the former South African pacer Dale Steyn in Ahmedabad in 2008. It means that Bumrah is the first pacer in 17 years to achieve the milestone, as Ishant's effort came in a pink-ball Test match.

Bumrah has had an interesting 2025 so far. After a memorable outing in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy in India, the senior fast bowler had to remain out of action for a while due to an injury issue and missed the ICC Champions Trophy, which India won in Dubai. He made his comeback through the IPL 2025 and took 18 wickets in 12 matches for the Mumbai Indians. He played just three matches in the all-important Test series in England as part of his workload management. Having taken 14 wickets in 3 games, a dip in Bumrah's pace and effort saw him miss the fifth and final Test at the Oval.
He has been in action since and played the Asia Cup 2025 before managing just three wickets in a five-match T20I series in Australia. However, the consistency of troubling the batters and sharpness was once again on display on the first day against the Proteas. Apart from Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj (2/47), Kuldeep Yadav (2/36), and Axar Patel (1/36) came up with impactful contributions.
For South Africa, Aiden Markram was the top run-getter with a 31-run contribution, whereas Wiaan Mulder (24) and Tony de Zorzi (24) couldn't convert their respective starts.
