India vs West Indies 1st Test: Jasprit Bumrah produced an impressive effort with the ball on the first day of the first Test between India and the West Indies at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on Thursday.
Bumrah scripted his name in the history books by achieving a huge feat, which has not been done for the last 113 years. He took three wickets while conceding only 42 runs as the visitors were bowled out for just 162 runs after opting to bat first.
Bumrah's average of 17 on Indian soil is the best by an Indian bowler with more than 50 wickets in the history of Test cricket. In fact, the star pacer has the fourth-best bowling average among players to complete a half-century of wickets on their home turf. No player in the world in the last 113 years has done better than the 31-year-old in this aspect, who went past New Zealand pacer Kyle Jamieson in the elite list.

Among the three players with 50+ wickets at home with a better bowling average than Bumrah, two players played in the 19th century. The only player to play in the 21st century was Sydney Barnes, who featured in his last game on English soil in 1912.

Johnny Briggs (ENG): 51 wickets in 10 matches, Avg - 13.62

Notably, Bumrah's strike-rate at home of 35.1 is the third-best in history behind the South African pair of Marco Jansen (33.8) and Kagiso Rabada (35.00), who were part of the Proteas' 2025 World Test Championship winning team.
Meanwhile, Bumrah holds the record of being the only bowler with more than 200 wickets in Test cricket with an average below 20 (19.74). Bumrah became only the second bowler and first pacer to take 50 wickets in Australia, England, and India. The senior Indian bowler has 51 wickets in 12 matches in England, while having a remarkable record of 64 wickets in 12 matches on Australian soil. The only player to achieve the unique feat is Australian spinner Nathan Lyon.
Overall, Bumrah is just the 11th bowler to have taken 50 or more wickets in three different countries.
