India vs West Indies 1st Test: Shubman Gill smashed an impressive fifty during the first Test between India and the West Indies at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on Friday.

This was Gill's first Test fifty on home soil after becoming India's new Test captain, as his promising knock helped him join Vijay Hazare, Sunil Gavaskar and Sourav Ganguly in an elite list. Gill became the fourth Indian to cross the 50-run mark in his first home as well as away Test as captain.

Vijay Hazare was the first Indian captain to cross the 50-run mark in both his first home and away Test. He made 164* against England in Delhi (December 1951) and 89 against England in Leeds (June 1952). Gavaskar, on the other hand, played an incredible knock of 116 runs in his first away Test (against New Zealand in Auckland, January 1976) and 205 runs in his first home Test (against the West Indies in Mumbai, December 1978).

During his stay at the crease, Gill hit five boundaries. He stitched an impactful partnership of 98 runs with KL Rahul for the third wicket.

The ongoing two-match Test series is Gill's first assignment at home as India's skipper. He headed into the first match on the back of a memorable outing in England during the five-match series. He was the top run-getter with 754 runs to his name on the back of four centuries as the series ended in a 2-2 draw.

He was recently a part of the Indian team that lifted the Asia Cup 2025 title with a famous win over the arch-rivals Pakistan in the final.
