The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced Shubman Gill as the new ODI captain on Saturday, replacing Rohit Sharma, who had a successful stint leading the team to the ICC Champions Trophy title in his last series as captain.

Interestingly, a 13-year-old tweet from Rohit went viral following his removal from the captaincy.

Rohit's cryptic 2012 tweet hinted at a change in the captaincy; he wrote, “End of an era (45) and the start of a new one (77)…"

The coincidence hasn't gone unnoticed as many fans point out that Rohit's ODI jersey number is 45, while Shubman Gill wears No. 77 for Team India.

BCCI chief selector Ajit Agarkar described the decision, stating: "It was practically impossible to continue with three different captains across formats."

Rohit will continue to represent India in the upcoming three-match ODI series against Australia, despite stepping down as the team's captain.

Shubman described his appointment as India's ODI captain as the "biggest honour," expressing pride in following Rohit Sharma's legacy.

"It's the biggest honour to be able to lead your country in the one-day and to be able to lead a side, you know that has done so well, it's immense pride for me, and I hope I'll be able to do great," Gill said in his first reactions after being named captain on bcci.tv.

"I think we have about 20 ODIs before we play the World Cup and obviously the ultimate goal is the World Cup in South Africa, so everything that we play, and all the players that we play they are going to try their best, and we're going to try our best to be able to have a great season before we get to the World Cup," he added.
