India win ICC T20 World Cup 2026: India's head coach Gautam Gambhir acknowledged the team's remarkable effort to win the ICC T20 World Cup 2026 title, beating New Zealand by 96 runs in the final at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on Sunday, March 8. He has already talked about the plans ahead as India aim to dominate world cricket.
The Men in Blue have won three successive ICC titles, two T20 World Cups in 2024 and 2026, apart from lifting the Champions Trophy trophy in 2025. As India created history by becoming the first team to win the three T20 WC titles and win the competition on home soil, Gambhir said he now wants Suryakumar Yadav’s men to be ‘even more ruthless’.
Despite not being at their best in the major part of the tournament, the campaign turned out to be a special one for the Indian team. Their only defeat came in the Super 8 match against South Africa. However, they peaked at the right time and became the first T20 team in the world to score four 250-plus totals in a calendar year. The next aim for the team is to cross the unprecedented 300-run mark in the shortest format of the game. "This is the start, not the end," Gambhir said emphatically on Star Sports.

"We still have a lot more to achieve. We still haven’t touched 300. Hopefully one day we will, and we want to be even more ruthless," he added.
Asked about the challenges of his job, the coach pointed to the lack of control over on-field performances. "You can create the best environment, make players feel secure and share your inputs and knowledge. But once the game starts, your results and reputation depend on how good the players are," he added.

Gambhir became the first Indian coach to win multiple ICC trophies, having previously coached the 2025 Champions Trophy triumph. While his Test record is among the worst in Indian history, the Indian team under his coaching remains unstoppable in white-ball cricket.
In the post-match press conference, he and Suryakumar spoke about shifting their goalposts to future competitions, including the 2028 Olympics. For now, though, Gambhir has already set his eyes on winning India the 2027 World Cup.
