IPL 2026: India’s star swashbuckling batter Ishan Kishan took the reins as Sunrisers Hyderabad's (SRH) interim captain for the initial matches of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026, replacing Pat Cummins, who is recuperating from a back injury.

Abhishek Sharma has been named as Kishan's deputy during this period.

“Pat Cummins will miss a few games while recovering from injury. Until he recovers, Ishan Kishan will be the Captain and Abhishek Sharma will be the Vice-Captain,” SRH said in an announcement.

Kishan, who recently played a pivotal role in India's T20 World Cup triumph, brings invaluable leadership knowledge to the role, having captained Jharkhand to their maiden Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy crown.

Sunrisers Hyderabad's IPL 2026 campaign will kick off on March 28, when they travel to Bengaluru's M Chinnaswamy Stadium to face defending champions Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB).

The team will then fly to Kolkata for their second match against Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) on April 2, before returning home to host Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) on April 5.

Pat Cummins has been sidelined since December due to a recurring back injury, missing the Ashes and the T20 World Cup. Cummins' tenure as SRH captain has yielded 15 wins from 30 matches, with 14 defeats and one no-result.
