The build-up for the IPL 2026 is all set to begin as the player auction for the tournament's 19th edition is likely to take place around December 13-15. According to a report in Cricbuzz on Friday (October 10), ahead of the auction, all 10 teams will have to release the list of retained players by November 15.

"The IPL 2026 auction is likely to be held in the second or third week of December, with December 13-15 emerging as the probable window," the report read.

"Additionally, there is no indication, at this stage, of the auction being taken overseas, as was the case in the last two editions – first in Dubai (2023) and then in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia (2024)."

The BCCI is expected to conduct the mini-auction in India itself. The auction has taken place overseas in the last two editions, first in Dubai (2023) and then in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia (2024).

There have already been so many speculations regarding the possible transfers and retentions by the teams. However, several reports claim that there are no indications of some big moves, except perhaps from Chennai Super Kings and Rajasthan Royals, who finished at the bottom last season.

Among the players reportedly on the release list are Deepak Hooda, Vijay Shankar, Rahul Tripathi, Sam Curran, and even Devon Conway from Chennai Super Kings (CSK). With the recent retirement of veteran spinner Ravichandran Ashwin, the five-time champions CSK have already added Rs 9.75 crore to their purse.

At the top of the Royals' list will be Sanju Samson, unless the franchise manages to pull off a trade deal for the skipper. There had also been some talk of the Royals' plans to release their Sri Lankan spinners Wanindu Hasaranga and Maheesh Theekshana.

Interestingly, Kolkata Knight Riders could also surprise everyone by releasing star all-rounder Venkatesh Iyer. He was signed back for Rs 23.75 crore in the mega auction last year, but he failed to live up to the expectations in the 18th edition of the world’s richest franchise cricket league.

Australian all-rounder Cameron Green is expected to come up as one of the leading names at the auction and could end up being a top pick as well. Having already played for big teams like the Mumbai Indians (in 2023) and the RCB (in 2024), Green missed the IPL 2025 due to injury issues but is now back in action and has impressed with his batting performances in white-ball cricket for the national team.
