Indian cricket team can receive good news soon ahead of the upcoming Asia Cup as the senior batter KL Rahul is expected to be fit for the tournament that runs from August 30 to September 17.
After pace bowlers Jasprit Bumrah and Prasidh Krishna returned from respective injuries for the Ireland T20I series, Rahul also looks set to return to international cricket after gaining full fitness from the injury he sustained during the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023 season.
The wicketkeeper-batter Rahul, who was forced to be on the sidelines due to a thigh injury is now completely fit and available for the selection and could be a part of India's squad for the Asia Cup 2023 as per the media reports.
The marquee tournament will be played in Pakistan and Asia Cup with the Men in Blue set to begin their campaign against arch-rivals Pakistan at Pallekele on September 2.
Rahul's return to the team adds a balance to the side with the batter also giving an option of a wicket-keeper and allowing the side to play an extra batter or an all-rounder.
The 31-year-old has been sharing his fitness updates regularly through his social media posts and stories as he was also seen batting and keeping in the nets.
"The coaches and medical experts at the BCCI's National Cricket Academy in Bangalore are satisfied with Rahul's progress/recovery. He will be available for selection for the Asia Cup," a reliable source was quoted as saying.
Rahul was informed to have started batting as per the BCCI's medical update a few days ago and was undergoing fitness drills at the NCA in Bengaluru.
While Rahul is expected to return to the side soon, the same cannot be said for the middle-order batter Shreyas Iyer who is also recovering from his injury.
It is most likely that Iyer will miss the Asia Cup, owing to a back issue that still remains a concern despite surgery.
