List of Overseas Captain to Win IPL: The IPL 2024 is all set to kick off on March 22 with the opening match scheduled to be played between MS Dhoni-led Chennai Super Kings and Royal Challengers Bangalore.

Chennai Super Kings will be heading into the 17th edition of the tournament as the defending champions, having lifted their record-equaling fifth IPL title last year with a win over Gujarat Titans in the final.

IPL has witnessed masterclasss from both the Indian and overseas players since its inaugural season in 2008 and both domestic young and international superstars have helped in the emergence of the league as one of the most popular ones.

The IPL 2024 will be having two overseas players as captains as Faf du Plessis will lead Royal Challengers Bangalore whereas Pat Cummins has been appointed as the skipper of Sunrisers Hyderabad.

On the other hand, the remaining eight franchises will have an Indian captain with Rishabh Pant and Shreyas Iyer returning as Delhi Capitals' and Kolkata Knight Riders' captains respectively whereas Gujarat Titans and Mumbai Indians have appointed Shubman Gill and Hardik Pandya as their captains respectively.

While the winning chart as IPL captain has majorly been dominated by the Indian names over the years, take a look at the overseas names who took their side to the glory.

Shane Warne

Former Australia spinner Shane Warne was appointed as the captain of Rajasthan Royals in 2008 and he was the only overseas skipper out of all eight teams that participated in the inaugural season of the tournament.

Warne ended up grabbing the opportunity with both hands as he capitalised with a title win in the very first edition of IPL.

Rajasthan Royals defeated MS Dhoni-led Chennai Super Kings in the final to clinch the trophy as their successful campaign saw the emergence of young players like Ravindra Jadeja, and Yusuf Pathan.

While the Aussie all-rounder Shane Watson was one of their notable performers, former Pakistan pacer Sohail Tanvir ended up winning the purple cap with 22 wickets to his name.

Adam Gilchrist

Deccan Chargers had a horrible outing in the inaugural season of IPL in 2008 as they finished at the bottom of the points table with just two wins.

Australia's former wicketkeeper-batter Adam Gilchrist, who had captained Chargers in a few matches of IPL 2008 in the absence of regular skipper VVS Laxman, was officially named captain for the 2009 edition.

He came up with a massive impact and led the side to the title victory in just the second edition of the tournament.

Deccan Chargers defeated Royal Challengers Bangalore in the low-scoring final despite skipper Gilchrist scoring 0 but he was instrumental with his bowling changes while defending just 143 runs.

Gilchrist became the second overseason captain to lift the IPL trophy in the 2009 season which was entirely played in South Africa.

David Warner

David Warner had a remarkable long and loyal stint at Sunrisers Hyderabad, having joined them from Delhi Daredevils (now Delhi Capitals) ahead of IPL 2014.

After spending a year at the franchise, Warner was appointed as the full-time captain in 2015 and he ended the season as the leading run-getter.

He continued his brilliance in the 2016 season and led the side to their first championship, himself contributing with 69 runs in 38 balls in the final against Royal Challengers Bangalore.

Warner finished the season with 848 runs, the second highest in the tournament, and came up victorious against Virat Kohli-led RCB who were believed to be favorites with the Indian batter himself having a stellar season with 973 runs to his name.

He became the third overseas player to lead an IPL team to the title victory.

Interestingly, the only three overseas captains to have led an IPL team to the title win are Australian players.

Notably, there are several overseas players who missed out on the IPL title with their team suffering defeat in the finals.

IPL 2014: Kings XI Punjab (Now Punjab Kings) lost against KKR in the final (KXIP captain: George Bailey)

IPL 2017: Rising Pune Supergiants lost against Mumbai Indians in the final (RPSG captain: Steve Smith)

IPL 2018: Sunrisers Hyderabad lost against Chennai Super Kings in the final (SRH captain: Kane Williamson)

IPL 2021: Kolkata Knight Riders lost against Chennai Super Kings in the final (KKR captain: Eoin Morgan)
