They ended up getting over the line in the high-scoring contest that saw 439 runs being scored in 40 overs with some great individual efforts entertaining the massive crowd.
Skipper Hardik Pandya finally got to witness a day to remember with his first win as MI captain after a horrible start to the tournament and a struggle to win the trust of the fans.
There was some reprieve for Pandya at last as the skipper did not face crowd hostility at MI's home venue for their fourth match.
With the stands mostly filled with around 18,000 children from various NGOs as the match was being played on the ESA (Education and Sports for All) day for the Reliance Foundation, the noise was all about cheering for the home team.
After being put into bat first, MI thrashed Delhi bowlers all around the park and posted a mammoth total of 234/5 on the back of Rohit Sharma's 49 and Tim David's unbeaten 45-run knock.
While Ishan Kishan and Pandya made crucial contributions of 42 and 39 respectively, Romario Shepherd provided the best moment of the match in the last over of MI's innings.
Shepherd smashed Anrich Nortje for 32 runs in the last over, helping the side to reach the huge total as he added 53 runs off just 13 balls with Tim David for the sixth wicket.
Shepherd remained unbeaten on 39 off 10 deliveries on the back of three fours and four sixes.
Chasing the target, DC tried their best on the back of a late fight by Tristan Stubbs who ended up as their top-run getter and remained unbeaten on 71 off 25 balls.
He came up with a remarkable effort and smashed three fours and seven sixes.
Prithvi Shaw too continued his consistency and smashed a crucial half-century, scoring 66 off 40 balls on the back of eight fours and three sixes.
While Abhishek Porel contributed with 41 off 31, no other batters managed to reach even the 20-run mark.
Delhi are now the new bottom-placed side with just one win and two points under their belt after the five matches.
