MS Dhoni might get involved in any coaching role of the Indian team in the near future, but his first stint in such a capacity in the dressing room didn't go as planned. Dhoni was the mentor of the Indian team during the 2021 T20 World Cup, a tournament that horribly went wrong for the Men in Blue in the UAE.

While Dhoni's IPL future still remains, BCCI have reportedly offered him an all-format mentorship job with Gautam Gambhir and the rest of the coaching staff set to remain in their respective roles. However, as per the report by CricBlogger, Dhoni is unlikely to take up the role until Gautam Gambhir is at the helm as the head coach in all three formats.

The report said it's a 'broad' role, which will include the responsibility of women’s and junior cricket teams to groom the upcoming stars in the country, as the board believes Dhoni could be influential there.

Notably, the former skipper was apparently offered the job after his brief stint in the position during the 2021 T20 World Cup, but now, the BCCI has made another effort to get the veteran star on board.

The report went on to claim that Dhoni wants to avoid any overlapping responsibilities with Gambhir due to their history of differences in the past. On the other hand, Dhoni is said to be more focused on preparing himself for the next IPL season at Chennai Super Kings (CSK), which could likely be his last.

The 44-year-old has been at the centre of debate due to the continuous speculations of his IPL retirement over the past few years. He has been pushing limits to continue the services at CSK. There have been rumours around as well that Dhoni might take up a mentorship role with the five-time champions in the near future.

Interestingly, even Gambhir didn't have any coaching experience before becoming India's all-format boss. He had a successful stint as mentor at Lucknow Super Giants and then won the IPL 2024 with his former franchise, Kolkata Knight Riders, in the same role.

While there have been challenges in the Test format, the Indian team have shown a lot of progress in the T20I and ODI formats even under Gambhir's coaching, who took over the role from Rahul Dravid.
