Chennai Super Kings (CSK) have made major changes to their coaching staff ahead of IPL 2027, parting ways with long-serving batting coach Michael Hussey and bowling coach Eric Simons as the franchise continues to rebuild its backroom team.

Hussey joined CSK as batting coach in 2018 after representing the franchise as a player for six seasons. Simons, meanwhile, had been part of the team’s coaching setup since 2018 and played an important role in working with the bowlers.

The five-time IPL champions also confirmed that assistant coach Rajiv Kumar, fielding coach James Foster and physiotherapist Tommy Simsek will not continue with the team from the 2027 season.

The changes come after a difficult few years for CSK, who have struggled to maintain their winning standards since lifting the IPL trophy in 2023.

CSK Bid Farewell To Mike Hussey And Eric Simons

CSK announced their decision to move on from Hussey with an emotional message on social media, acknowledging his long association with the franchise.

“From the very first season in 2008, you have been an integral part of the Chennai Super Kings family,” the franchise said.

The team also praised Hussey for his contribution as a player and coach, highlighting his dedication, humility and commitment over the years.

“Your place in our history will forever remain special, Hussmeister. Once a Super King, always a Super King,” the statement added.

CSK also thanked Simons for his service to the franchise, crediting him with helping shape the team’s bowling unit.

“An integral part of the Chennai Super Kings coaching setup since 2018, Eric Simons has played an important role in shaping our bowling unit and contributing to the team’s success over the years,” the franchise said.

The team wished Simons well for the future as it confirmed the end of his stint with the coaching staff. Former India pacer Mohit Sharma has been brought in to replace him as bowling coach.

Stephen Fleming’s Exit Triggered Major CSK Changes

CSK’s coaching overhaul follows the departure of head coach Stephen Fleming, who had been closely associated with the franchise for years. Fleming has moved on to take charge of England’s Test team.

The franchise’s results in recent IPL seasons also played a part in the need for change. After winning the title in 2023, CSK finished fifth in 2024, 10th in 2025 and eighth in 2026.

Former India fast bowler Zaheer Khan has taken over as head coach and will begin his tenure with CSK in IPL 2027.

With several members of the previous coaching group leaving, Zaheer will have a new-look support staff as he prepares for his first season in charge of the franchise.

Gareth Batty Joins CSK As Assistant Coach

Meanwhile, former England spinner Gareth Batty has joined CSK as an assistant coach, becoming part of Zaheer’s coaching team ahead of the new season.

Batty, 49, represented England in nine Tests, 10 ODIs and one T20I. He also has a connection with Zaheer, having worked alongside the former India pacer during their time at English county club Worcestershire.

Batty has built a strong reputation as a coach since moving away from playing. He guided Surrey to three consecutive County Championship titles between 2022 and 2024 and also worked as an assistant coach with MI London in the revamped Hundred competition.

Speaking about his move to CSK, Batty expressed excitement about the new challenge.

“Thank you hardly seems enough for all that Surrey has meant to me. It has been a privilege to serve this great club, to share in its success and challenges,” he said.

“The new journey is a very exciting one for my family and I with CSK in the IPL and I’m looking forward to getting going,” he added.

Surrey Director Of Cricket Praises Batty

Surrey director of cricket Alec Stewart also praised Batty’s contribution to the club, pointing to his understanding of the game and his ability to get the best out of those around him.

“He has a passion and knowledge for the game as well as a determination to get the very best out of himself and those around him,” Stewart said.

He added that Batty had carried the same qualities into coaching that had served him well during his playing career.
