Not Joe Root, Ben Stokes Backs This Star As His Successor To Lead England In Tests

Former England captain Ben Stokes has thrown his full support behind Harry Brook to become England’s next Test captain after announcing his retirement from the longest format of the game. Stokes believes Brook is the obvious choice to take over, saying the vice-captain already possesses the leadership qualities needed for the role.

Stokes, who stunned the cricketing world by announcing his retirement during the ongoing third Test against New Zealand, described Brook as one of England’s senior players and backed the talented batter to lead the team in the future. According to Stokes, Brook’s appointment as vice-captain was a clear indication of the faith the team management has in his leadership abilities.

“If I was asked who I think should do it, I would be throwing my 100 per cent support behind Harry Brook. There’s a reason why he was asked to be vice-captain of this team,” Stokes said, as per Sky Sports.

“You’re asked to be vice-captain of a team for a certain reason. I was vice-captain under Joe for a long time. It’s the natural progression. If the captain is not there or unavailable, then you step up to be that. There’s absolutely no reason why Harry shouldn’t be asked to do that. He’s an incredible player, one of the more senior players in this group-we all know he’s a phenomenally talented individual when it comes to his skill as a batter,” he added.

Stokes’ retirement came at the end of a disappointing series for England. Led by Tom Latham, New Zealand defeated the hosts by 160 runs in the third Test at Trent Bridge to seal the three-match series 2-1.

The result was a historic one for New Zealand, as it marked their first Test series victory in a three-match contest on English soil since 1999.
