David Warner achieved a significant milestone by becoming the fastest to reach 1,000 runs in the ODI World Cup and the fourth Australian batter to reach 1000 runs in the prestigious tournament.
In just 19 innings, the left-handed opener managed to achieve this milestone by smashing a boundary down the ground off Hardik Pandya in the seventh over of the game. Warner required a mere eight runs to reach this remarkable milestone on Sunday.
Warner ultimately got out for 41 runs while attempting a lofted drive off Kuldeep Yadav’s bowling. The ball went straight to Kuldeep’s hands.
Warner, widely regarded as one of the finest white-ball batsmen in history, surpassed the records set by Sachin Tendulkar and AB de Villiers, both of whom took 20 innings to achieve a similar feat.
The list also includes West Indies' iconic opener Viv Richards and India's stylish left-handed opener Sourav Ganguly, who achieved the feat in 21 innings.
In the mouth-watering clash, Australia's captain Pat Cummins won the toss and chose to bat first. The game featured a notable partnership between Warner and Steve Smith, with a 69-run partnership.
India's bowlers, however, managed to regain momentum at Chepauk. Jasprit Bumrah claimed India's first wicket of the tournament when he dismissed Mitchell Marsh, caught by Virat Kohli at first slip.
Indian spinners wreaked havoc by claiming the following four wickets, with Ravindra Jadeja accounting for three of them, dismissing Steven Smith, Marnus Labuschagne, and Alex Carey in quick succession. As of the latest update, Australia were at 130-5 in 32 Overs.
With Shubman Gill unable to recover from illness, he is replaced by Ishan Kishan. For Australia, Travis Head and Marcus Stoinis missed out for Australia due to injury. Both teams will be eager to kick off their World Cup campaigns with a victory.
