After a shocking super-over loss to UP Warriorz (UPW), Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) Women's team skipper Smriti Mandhana has publicly apologized to Ellyse Perry after failing to get over the line in Women's Premier League (WPL) 2025 match.
Put to bat first, Perry stole the show in the first innings with a fiery 56-ball 90. Danni Wyatt-Hodge provided the only notable batting support with a 57-run contribution, dismissed in the 15th over. Thereafter, Perry took charge, single-handedly propelling the score in the final overs.
However, in the thrilling Super Over that followed the tie, RCB surprisingly opted to send Smriti Mandhana and Richa Ghosh to bat instead of Perry. Unfortunately, this decision backfired, as RCB failed to chase down the nine-run target set by their opponents.
"Always good to have Pez back bowling. An all-rounder like her, she is one of the greatest in women's cricket. Brilliant to watch (her batting). As a team, really have to tell her sorry…how could we not win that game for her. Ekta, Sneh Rana - all the bowlers bowled extremely well. Sometimes, it does happen and we can take a lot of pride from that game. Things faltered towards the end, we will take that in our stride and come back stronger," Mandhana said in a post-match presentation.
Sophie Ecclestone, who registered economical figures of 4-0-29-0, showed her prowess with the bat, scoring 33 off 19 balls to help UP Warriorz made a remarkable comeback to tie the match and take it to the Super Over, where they came out on top.
UP Warriorz managed just eight runs in the super over bowled by Kim Garth.
The onus was then on RCB skipper Smriti Mandhana and Richa Ghosh to chase down the target of nine runs against Ecclestone but the English cricketer came out on top, conceding just four runs.
