The Mumbai Police Crime Branch on Wednesday revealed that underworld don Dawood Ibrahim-led "D-Company" was behind the Rs 5 crore ransom call to India cricketer Rinku Singh. According to the police, the D-Company made three ransom calls to the promotional team of Rinku Singh between February and April this year, demanding Rs 5 crore.
According to a report by news agency IANS, two persons were arrested by the Interpol in connection with the ransom calls earlier this year. The accused, identified as Mohammad Naveed and Mohammad Dilshad, were apprehended from Trinidad and Tobago and were handed over to the Indian authorities on August 1.

The report further stated that the accused were also named in the Rs 10 crore ransom threat to former Bandra MLA Zeeshan Siddique following his father Baba Siddique's murder in Mumbai in October last year. Baba Siddique was shot dead outside his office in the metropolis by two assailants allegedly belonging to the Lawrence Bishnoi-Goldy Brar gang. Zeeshan Siddique had received threatening emails from April 19–21 demanding a ransom.

Rinku was recently seen in action for India and was part of the team that lifted the Asia Cup 2025 title with a famous win over Pakistan in the final. It was Rinku who smashed the winning boundary for India in the final, which was his maiden appearance in the tournament.

After humble beginnings in his early cricketing days, Rinku grabbed massive headlines during the IPL 2025 when he smashed five sixes in an over against Yash Dayal to win a thrilling clash for the Kolkata Knight Riders against the Gujarat Titans. He has been fulfilling a finisher's role for KKR over the past few IPL seasons.
The left-handed batter got his maiden call for India during the T20Is against Ireland in 2023. He has emerged as a T20I specialist for India, having represented the national team in 34 matches and has 550 runs at an average of 42.31 on the back of three fifties.
As far as his IPL numbers are concerned, Singh has played 58 games for the Kolkata Knight Riders and has scored 1099 runs. He was also a part of KKR's IPL-winning team in 2024.
The 27-year-old recently got engaged to Member of Parliament (MP) Priya Saroj. He will be seen next in action during India’s upcoming white-ball tour of Australia, including five T20Is.
