Former cricketer Sanjay Manjrekar did not mince his words on star batter Rohit Sharma's Test retirement, weighing in that with the 38-year-old's current fitness levels, his days as an opener were numbered.

India's one of the most successful captains, Rohit, on May 7 called time on his exquisite Test career via Instagram story, citing that he will continue to represent India in ODIs.

Rohit, who has been out of favour in form, had a sombre outing in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, and it drew the attention, criticism, adding fuel to his retirement rumours.

Taking to X, Manjrekar pinpointed that Rohit could only gather just 164 runs in his previous 15 innings, noting that the 10 outings came at home against Bangladesh and New Zealand.

"164 in his last 15 innings. Out of which 10 were at home v Bangladesh & NZ. Average 10.9. With his current fitness levelsRohit Sharma’s days as Test opener were over. So...," Manjrekar posted on X.

Rohit's sudden Test retirement announcement left India in a precarious position with no experienced opener at the helm ahead of the five-match Test series in England beginning on June 20.

Announcing his big decision to retire from Tests, Rohit posted on his Instagram, "It’s been an absolute honor to represent my country in whites. Thank you for all the love and support over the years."

The swashbuckling opener scored 4301 runs in 67 Tests at an average of 40.57.

Despite finishing with an impressive Test career, his recent form had noticeably dipped as he only managed to score 42 runs at an average of 10.5 against Bangladesh last year, while 91 runs from 6 innings against New Zealand in 2024 in three Tests.
