Cricketers react to Ajit Pawar's tragic death: Indian cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar was quick to react and paid tribute to Maharashtra's deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar, who lost his life in a plane crash in Baramati on Wednesday morning. The incident occurred when the plane carrying Pawar (66) and four others landed near Baramati. Pawar was travelling to Baramati from Mumbai to address public meetings as part of the campaign for the February 5 zilla parishad elections in the state.

Sachin, who also hails from Maharashtra, expressed his condolences, mentioning that the state has lost a dedicated leader for the people. "Very sad to learn about the untimely demise of Shri Ajit Pawar ji. Maharashtra has lost a dedicated leader who worked for the people across the state. My heartfelt condolences to his family and friends. Om Shanti," Sachin wrote on X.

India's veteran batter Ajinkya Rahane also took to social media after Pawar's unfortunate demise. "Saddened by the tragic passing of Maharashtra Deputy CM Ajit Pawar dada. My thoughts are with his family," Rahane posted on X.

Pawar was a huge figure in Maharashtra's political circuit, but also had an incredible interest in cricket. He, along with the former Maharashtra CM Eknath Shinde and current head of the state Devendra Fadnavis, felicitated the Indian cricketers Rohit Sharma, Yashasvi Jaiswal, Suryakumar Yadav and Shivam Dube after the team lifted the T20 World Cup 2024 title. Speaking on the occasion, Pawar said, "Rohit Sharma has made it clear that he would no longer play T20 internationals. But whenever we watch a T20 match, we will always remember you and your team's achievements."

Prime Minister Narendra Modi also mourned the death of Ajit Pawar, describing him as "a leader of the people" with a strong grassroots connect. "Shri Ajit Pawar Ji was a leader of the people, having a strong grassroots level connect. He was widely respected as a hardworking personality at the forefront of serving the people of Maharashtra," PM Modi said in a post on X.

Calling the incident "very shocking and saddening", he added, "His understanding of administrative matters and passion for empowering the poor and downtrodden were also noteworthy. His untimely demise is very shocking and saddening. Condolences to his family and countless admirers. Om Shanti."
