Former India captain Sourav Ganguly has joined the bandwagon and stated that he finds it unbelievable how players like Yashasvi Jaiswal and Shreyas Iyer were snubbed from the Asia Cup squad. He also added that players like Rinku Singh and Jitesh Sharma could have been left out from the 15-man squad.

In August, Ajit Agarkar-led Senior Selection Committee left Iyer out of the Asia Cup team. With pressure mounting from fans, Iyer was awarded captaincy of India A for two multi-day games against Australia A, which will take place in September.

Iyer has been a proven captain with his resume, which includes KKR's third IPL trophy in history as well as Punjab Kings appearance in the 2025 edition final.

“I am surprised not to see Iyer in the Asia Cup squad. Whenever I don’t see him in a white-ball squad, I am taken aback. He has played such brilliant innings in the IPL and has been a great captain," Ganguly said while speaking to Anandabazar Patrika.

“You cannot omit Iyer from white-ball teams. He deserves a spot ahead of Rinku Singh and Jitesh Sharma. We have Sanju Samson as the wicketkeeper, so why would we still not bring in Iyer?" Ganguly threw a question for his former teammate Ajit Agarkar.

Earlier, Iyer was a vital cog for India's Champions Trophy 2025-winning campaign as he was one of the highest run-scorers in the format.
