Shubman Gill Injury Update, IND vs SA Test: Indian captain Shubman Gill was released from the Woodlands Hospital in Kolkata on Sunday, a day after he was admitted due to a neck injury. His absence made a huge difference as India ended up losing the first Test against South Africa at the Eden Gardens.

As the Proteas wrapped things up well inside three days after bowling India out for 93 runs while defending the 124-run target, they took a 1-0 lead in the two-match series. Cricket Association of Bengal president Sourav Ganguly visited Gill at Woodlands Multispeciality Hospital hours after the conclusion of the series opener. The win helped Temba Bavuma become the first South African captain in 15 years to win a Test match in India. In the last 15 years, the Proteas have played seven Test matches in India but failed to win any. In fact, they suffered humiliating defeats in six of those fixtures.

Gill, who picked up the injury while batting on Day 2, was ruled out of the remainder of the first Test ahead of Day 3. He was unavailable for India’s second innings, where the side was bowled out for just 93. "Captain Shubman Gill had a neck injury on Day 2 of the ongoing Test against South Africa in Kolkata. He was taken to the hospital for examination after the end of the day’s play," BCCI said in a statement.

"He is currently under observation in the hospital. He will take no further part in the Test. He will continue to be monitored by the BCCI medical team," the statement added.

The star batter Gill was taken by stretcher into an ambulance and admitted to a Kolkata hospital on the evening of November 15. The unfortunate injury has triggered speculations around the availability of Gill for the second and final Test. The 26-year-old has been in action consistently across formats after being appointed as India's new Test and ODI skipper.

Gill headed into the series on the back of a remarkable performance in Test cricket lately, having scored 754 runs in five matches at an average of 75.40. He followed it with 192 runs in the two-match home series against the West Indies.
